To know whether you need glaucoma treatment, you need to know what is glaucoma of the eye.  Glaucoma occurs when too much fluid pressure called intraocular pressure builds up in the eye and damages the optic nerve, interrupting signals to the brain.  If left untreated, glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness. Because there are typically no early symptoms of a buildup of fluid pressure, vision loss is gradual. Without proper glaucoma treatment, patients will begin to lose their side or peripheral vision and may not see objects out of the corner to their eye.

  • Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma without any symptoms in the beginning stages. As the pressure builds in the eye, the optic nerve slowly becomes more damages and you may experience spots in your vision.
  • Normal-tension glaucoma is when the eye pressure is normal or below normal but, optic nerve damage still occurs.
  • Closed-angle glaucoma is when the ‘drainage angle’ of the eye is blocked. This is the least common type but, with many glaucoma symptoms. Because eye pressure raises quickly it results in headache, nausea, severe eye pain and many other symptoms and should be treated immediately.
  • Congenital glaucoma develops in babies and infants and is considered rare as well as hereditary. If not diagnosed early, congenital glaucoma will result in blindness.
  • Secondary glaucoma is a type of glaucoma that results from eye injury.
